Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is key for vehicle safety and comfort. It also ensures fuel is used efficiently, and that tyres last longer and wear evenly.
Why is tyre pressure so important?
- Optimised performance
- Better handling and control
- Braking stability and shorter braking distance
- Maintains tyre temperature, preventing overheating and burst tyres
- Effective fuel consumption and lower emissions
- Ensures tyres last longer and wear evenly
How often should I check my tyre pressure?
Tyre pressure should be checked before a long journey and/or at least once a month.
For an accurate reading, always check pressure when tyres are cold.
How to check tyre pressure?
Identify the correct tyre pressure for your vehicle. You'll find it in your handbook, inside the driver’s door or fuel cap
Unscrew the plastic cap on the air valve
Press the tyre-pressure gauge against the valve and hold it down firmly. If you hear a hissing noise, you are letting air out and should press down harder
Read the measurement on the gauge
To add air, pump the gauge until the correct pressure is shown. To deflate, depress the tyre valve
What happens when tyres are over-inflated?
Over-inflated tyres find it harder to absorb irregularities in the road, which makes handling more difficult.
The temperature inside an over-inflated tyre can rise significantly, weakening the casing and causing internal damage.
The sidewall of the tyre will also wear much faster.
