Pre NCT Check - All You Need to Know

What is an NCT?

The National Car Test (NCT) is a compulsory vehicle inspection programme in Ireland. It is a check of basic requirements that are visible and accessible at the time of the test.

The NCT was introduced in 2000 as a preventative safety measure that ensures vehicles using Irish roads are in sound working order.

Defects found must be repaired, and the car must pass a re-test before a driver can be issued with NCT certificate. It’s an offence to drive a vehicle without a valid NCT certificate. You can get a fine of up to €2000, and/or up-to five penalty points and/or imprisonment for up to three months.

There are 46 NCT centres located throughout Ireland.

The NCT fee for a full test is €55 (€54.10 from 01/09/2020) and a re-test costs €28.

If your not sure when you NCT is due, you can check HERE.

What NCT Test Examines

During the NCT, specific items are checked and tested. These include:

  1. Brakes
  2. Exhaust emissions
  3. Wheels and tyres
  4. Lights
  5. Steering and suspension
  6. Chassis and underbody
  7. Electrical systems
  8. Glass and mirrors
  9. Transmission
  10. Interior
  11. Fuel system

The NCT applies to all cars over four years old and is a statutory requirement to pass every two years.

Benefits of NCT Testing

NCT testing will spot potentially dangerous issues or defects. NCT also helps to reduce the number of road accidents by pointing out such flaws as faulty brakes, worn tyres, and defective headlight aim.

Some benefits of NCT testing include:

  • Safer, more reliable cars
  • Longer vehicle service life
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Reduced air and noise pollution
  • Avoidance of penalty points

The main NCT failure items for 2018 were:

  • Tyres
  • Front Suspension.
  • Brake Lines/Hoses.
  • Headlamp Aim.
